"Una Cooperativa es una una EMPRESA ASOCIATIVA SIN ÁNIMO DE LUCRO de primer grado, creada por 20 personas que se une voluntariamente con el OBJETO de PRODUCIR O DISTRIBUIR conjunta y eficientemente BIENES O SERVICIOS para satisfacer las necesidades de sus asociados y de la comunidad en general".

Las cooperativas Especializadas: FINANCIERAS Y DE AHORRO Y CRÉDITO, su ACTIVIDAD es siempre solo Económico (Rendimiento Financiero).

"Las cooperativas en razón del desarrollo de sus ACTIVIDADES podrán ser (artículo 61 ley 79 de 1988):

1.Especializadas (educación, vivienda, transporte, salud, vigilancia, trabajo asociado, seguros,)

2. Multiactivas.

3. Integrales.
